Europe offers everything from volcanic road trips and island-hopping to overnight rail journeys and historic cities.
For 2026, ten routes stand out for travellers who want more than a conventional city break, combining dramatic landscapes, culture and memorable journeys across the continent.
Europe’s Dream Trips

Iceland, Rail and Cinque Terre

Iceland’s 1,322 km Ring Road circles the country through lava fields, geothermal areas, waterfalls and dramatic coastal scenery. Route 1 is fully paved, so a standard car is sufficient for the main circuit, although road and weather conditions should always be checked before departure.
For a car-free alternative, Europe’s growing sleeper-train network makes it possible to connect destinations such as Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague, Vienna and Budapest while travelling overnight.
September is especially rewarding in Cinque Terre, when the grape harvest begins and summer crowds start to ease. The five villages — Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore — are linked by trains and hiking trails. In 2026, a one-day Cinque Terre Train Card costs €22, €29.50 or €35, depending on the demand period.

France, Lapland and Greece

The Côte d’Azur remains one of Europe’s classic coastal journeys, linking Nice, Antibes and Cannes with smaller towns known for art, architecture and Mediterranean scenery. Regional trains are generally more convenient than driving between the busiest Riviera destinations.
For a completely different atmosphere, Finnish Lapland offers snowy forests, husky rides, winter activities and the possibility of seeing the northern lights. Rovaniemi is one of the region’s main gateways and has several festive attractions that operate throughout the year, making it particularly popular with families during winter.
In Greece, the Ionian Islands reward slower travel. Begin in Corfu, then continue towards Paxos, Lefkada, Ithaka, Kefallonia and Zakynthos. Ferry services become less frequent outside the summer season, so connections should be checked carefully before booking accommodation.

France

Europe’s Dream Trips
The Alhambra remains one of the region’s defining landmarks, and advance reservations are strongly recommended, particularly during busy travel periods.
The appeal of these trips lies as much in the journey as in the destination. Whether travelling by car, ferry, train or on foot, leaving enough time for each route is what turns a packed itinerary into a memorable European adventure.
