Tinned tuna can be turned into a satisfying homemade meal with just a few everyday ingredients. Combined with soft potatoes, fresh herbs, ginger, and warming spices, it becomes a flavorful mixture that can be shaped into small patties and fried until crisp.
This recipe brings together simple pantry ingredients with plenty of seasoning. Crushed peanuts add a little crunch, while lemon juice gives the mixture a fresh finish. Serve the patties as a starter, a light lunch, or part of a larger meal.
Ingredients for Tuna Patties
4 large potatoes
2 cans tinned tuna (425g each)
1 onion
5 cm fresh ginger
3 green chillies
½ bunch fresh coriander
3 tsp gorom moshla
2 tsp chaat moshla
½ tsp paprika
Juice of 1 lemon
80g roasted salted peanuts
2 eggs
1 cup (100g) dried breadcrumbs
Vegetable or canola oil
Salt
Freshly ground black pepper
Extra lemon for serving
Ingredients for Homemade Gorom Moshla
3–4 green cardamom pods
5 cloves
2 small cinnamon sticks
1 tbsp black peppercorns
1 dried red chilli
1 bay leaf
6 tbsp cumin seeds
4 tbsp coriander seeds
Preparing the Tuna Mixture
The potatoes provide a soft base that helps the patties hold their shape, while the tuna gives the mixture its main flavour. Fresh herbs, ginger, and spices bring extra depth, and crushed peanuts add a pleasant contrast. Drain the tuna well before mixing to avoid making the mixture too wet.
Preparation and Cooking Instructions
1. Toast the cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, peppercorns, dried chilli, bay leaf, cumin, and coriander seeds over low heat until fragrant. Cool and grind into a fine powder.
2. Boil the potatoes until tender, drain, and roughly mash.
3. Drain the tuna and break it into flakes in a large bowl.
4. Add the mashed potatoes, finely chopped onion, ginger, green chillies, and coriander.
5. Mix in the gorom moshla, chaat moshla, paprika, lemon juice, salt, and black pepper.
6. Crush the roasted peanuts and fold them into the mixture.
7. Shape the mixture into evenly sized balls, then flatten them into patties about 6–8 cm wide.
8. Beat the eggs in one shallow bowl and place the breadcrumbs in another.
9. Dip each patty into the egg, then coat it evenly with breadcrumbs.
10. Heat oil in a heavy-based frying pan over medium heat.
11. Shallow-fry the patties in batches for about three to four minutes per side, until golden and heated through.
12. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate and serve warm with lemon wedges.
Serving and Preparation Tips
For the best texture, serve the patties shortly after frying. Their crisp coating contrasts nicely with the soft centre, while lemon adds freshness to the seasoned mixture. You can make smaller patties for sharing or keep them larger for a more filling portion. The mixture can also be prepared ahead of time. Shape the patties and place baking paper between them before freezing so they do not stick together. They can be coated before freezing or given an additional breadcrumb coating shortly before cooking.
If you prefer an air fryer, arrange the patties with enough space between them and cook until the outside is lightly browned and crisp. Check that they are heated through before serving.
Crispy tuna patties offer a practical way to turn canned tuna and potatoes into a flavourful homemade dish. Fresh herbs, ginger, spices, and peanuts create a satisfying mixture, while the breadcrumb coating gives each patty its golden finish. Whether served as a snack, starter, or main meal, they are easy to portion and can be prepared ahead. Enjoy them warm with a little lemon for a simple, satisfying result.
